CD writers and now more frequently DVD writers are being an increasingly common household item, it is now standard for a new PC to be equipped with CD or DVD writers and PCs without this hardware can easily have one or more writers installed at a relatively low cost. Advances in the technology used in and used to manufacture DVD writers has allowed even those on a fairly modest budget the ability to burn data, music and films to DVDs and CDs and it is unusual to find a shop bought PC intended for use at home to come equipped without a writer. When writers first became available there was a certain level of concern that the wide availability of writers may increase the incidence of software piracy, but copy protection has prevented people from making use of household writers to manufacture illegal copies.
